Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan replies to my letter that attacked the Bush Social Security plan:
Thank you . . .
. . for contacting me to oppose the Administration's plan to privatize Social Security. I couldn't agree with you more!
According to the Congressional Budget Office, Social Security can pay 100% of its commitments until 2052. Even after that, Social Security can pay nearly 80% of its commitments without any changes to the law. We need to strengthen Social Security with sensible changes. But privatization - which would slash benefits and drastically increase the national debt - is not the answer.
Today, I will be unveiling a new website and an online petition to keep the Security in Social Security. I wanted you to be one of the first people to have an opportunity to sign the petition to President Bush and tell him that privatization is NOT the answer.
To join the fight, go to http://www.stabenow.senate.gov/socialsecurity
and sign the online petition.
Thank you again for contacting me about this important issue. As always, please let me know if ever I can be of assistance to you or your family.
Feel free to add your name to the petition too. The more the merrier!
