Right now, with all the primaries of 2010 over, we need to focus on the general election. Let's urge Democrats to stop caving on every issue and at least put up a fight, to try to get our voters motivated. The polls are starting to move, but it might not be enough. And I realize that there's also a slim chance of Democrats ever deciding to do the right thing. But, right now, there's not a whole lot we can do, apart from returning these spineless, corporation-loving losers to power, mostly since the Republicans could literally destroy the country, if not the world. We can't really do a whole lot about the Democrats now, BUT, what we can do is make some plans for the future.
We need to draw up a list for 2012 and 2014 of House and Senate Democrats in need of a progressive primary challenge. It's a multi-year process and if we don't succeed at first, keep trying. That's how the right-wing took over the Republicans, so we can't give up at the first failure. And there will be failures. We came tantalizingly close to having a prayer in the Arkansas Senate race, but the corporations edged us out. But, if we start planning far enough in advance, recruiting good candidates (perhaps even from our own ranks), raising money, and spreading the word, perhaps we can make the Democrats fear us. They'll try to ignore us or suppress us at first, which is what people in power always do. But we must not give up or try to go third party, because that's what they want us to do.
So, what needs to be done is that we need to draw up a list of the least loyal Democrats and the most likely primary challengers in their districts or states. If we can't find someone, let's have someone from this site run. Democrats who publicly undermine the party in a rhetorical sense must also get challenged.
Now, I understand that some districts are just so conservative that taking out the Democrat would do little to hold the district. There's not much we can do about Gene Taylor, whose sole virtue is that he voted for Nancy Pelosi for speaker. No, I think the focus should be on districts that are, say, R+5 or less. Now, if we can come up with a credible challenge for people like Taylor, great, but I don't expect that to happen, at least not at first. Let's improve the Democrats where we can and move on from there.
Ultimately, the key is to make the Establishment respect us and the only thing that any Establishment respects is power.
