It seems that these voter suppression bills in Wisconsin, Florida, and elsewhere might essentially hand elections to Republicans for possibly the next 50 years. Don't laugh, in the south, they passed bills that pretty much disenfranchised black voters for almost 100 years. I normally am not one given to despair or panic, but it seems like we will have a problem we can't solve, unless the courts become involved. And since the courts tend to be Republican dominated, I don't count on that too much. Democracy is essentially dead and Republicans are glad. You wouldn't want the unwashed to vote or have their opinion registered. How do we deal with this? Massive protests are simply ignored and if they get too big, well, they can always be greeted with violence. They don't fear elections anymore, because, well, our voters aren't allowed to vote anymore. I do not advocate violence, but I don't see too many other plans. Perhaps we will luck out and get enough votes in to recall the Republicans in Wisconsin. I was confident, but now I'm freaking out.
I hate this feeling. I hate that national Democrats don't seem to care whether or not they win elections ever. Like I said, I am not one given to panic. I don't like freaking out, but someone explain to me how there isn't going to be a boot on our neck for the rest of our future. Liberals and other political outsiders used to wonder when people would wake up. Well, we're starting to now, but it might not matter anymore. I'm damn well going to vote and contribute to campaigns. I just hope it means something. I really don't want it coming to violence. This country didn't fight a revolution and a bloody civil war to have our experiment with representative democracy get trashed and have us turn back to violence. We have come too far for this. This is tightly coordinated and truly frightening.
Anyway, I'm done ranting now, but I don't know how we can be complacent about this. Any good ideas? I'd love to hear them. Talk me down here.
