According to a report in the Washington Post, efforts are underway to prohibit the use of of the Washington NFL franchise's offensive nickname during and leading up to the November 2nd game in Minnesota.
The Vikings are playing this season at TCF Bank Stadium, the home stadium of the University of Minnesota. In a letter to US Representative Betty McCollum, Univ. of Minnesota President Eric Kaler indicated that the University was working with the Vikings to eliminate the use of the nickname from "promotional and game date materials".
Kaler was responding to a letter to Vikings President Zygi Wilf from Rep. McCollum -- on which Kaler was cc'd -- which called on the Vikings to take a stand against "that hateful slur" and which urged Wilf to condemn the name.
The Vikings are reportedly undecided as to how to handle the University's request and will be meeting with the University to discuss this further.
Meanwhile, the representatives of that Washington team continue to show their cluelessness and stated:
We have met many native Americans from Minnesota who agree with our position and feel we are using the term correctly and honorably.
