My phone rings again. On the other end of the line is a candidate. She sounds tired and defeated and angry and hurt all the same time. She sounds like she's at her wits end because the election is only days away and she feels like the thing she's put her heart and soul into for a year now is all but a lost cause.
She might be a school board candidate. Or he might someone running for a city commission seat. Or a judgeship. Sometimes he's from a major metropolitan area where Democrats are expected to win but where the GOP has propped up its own "Democrats". Or maybe she's from a small rural district where Democrats never win and she's feeling like nobody, even the local party, gives a rat's ass about her or her candidacy.
These are the heartbreaking calls I get and the infuriating stories I hear every week at Bold Blue Media. And invariably, every time I hang up the phone, I want to throw something against the wall. Because I watch as tens of millions of dollars are raised for high profile candidates while our school board candidates and city commission candidates get the cold shoulder and no support.
I'm reminded why I started Bold Blue Media. Because we have to change this horribly skewed sense of priorities and I haven't seen any indication that anyone else is going to do it.
For those of you who have been supporters of Bold Blue Media by being subscribers to our monthly magazine, I want to THANK YOU on behalf of the candidates who we've already helped (and are helping this very day). It's because of you that my first question is ALWAYS "What do you need and how can we help you win?" instead of "What's your budget?" We've built websites for campaigns and made our own custom built callbank center available as well. We've helped them raise money and use social media effectively. We've even provided them with free media training from world renowned expert, TJ Walker. Because of you, we've done all this at super low cost just so that campaigns can get the help they need to have a better shot at winning.
So thank you for that, on behalf of the candidates.
As frustrating as it is sometimes, nothing energizes me more than helping these candidates. They're in it because they're passionate and they really CARE about their communities, not because it's a stepping stone to the Presidency. There's something honest and refreshing about that and I feel like the luckiest person in the world to be doing what I do.
