Lieberman Commits To Support Reid as Senate Leader

Tue Aug 15, 2006 at 01:15:25 PM PDT

I have been very skeptical about Joe Lieberman's commitment to support Harry Reid as Leader of the Senate should he be elected as an Independent. Given the Republican support for Lieberman, both in statements, and by contributions, it seemed to me that at the very least, Lieberman would be noncommittal.

I was wrong:

Though Joe Lieberman declared before losing the primary to Ned Lamont that he would support Harry Reid as Democratic Senate leader, many have since raised the question of whether Lieberman would unequivocally promise to back Reid again, now that Lieberman is running as an independent, is getting campaign donations from Republicans, and needs some GOP votes to win the general election. So I posed the question to the Lieberman campaign. The answer:

Yes.

More.
Here is Gerstein's response:

Senator Lieberman is a Democrat, will continue to be a Democrat and is committed to caucusing with the Democrats should he be reelected. If reelected, he is absolutely committed to supporting Senator Reid as leader, and he very much hopes it will be as majority leader.

So what do the Republicans like Bush, Cheney, McGavick, Shays, Mark Kennedy, etc. have to say about this?

Here is what I have to say: Good on Senator Lieberman. I still don't support you. There is still much more for you to do - like actively campaign for Connecticut Democrats, denounce the Republican attacks on your behalf against Democrats, and most importantly, personally renounce the race baiting and the Old and New McCarthyism being practiced by your campaign and by yourself.

Do these things so that we can respect you again. I'll never support you it is true, but I sure would like to respect you.
