Yes, we all know it. The Supreme Court sucks. Ass.
Yet, in public opinion surveys, the Supreme Court rates higher than the other two branches of government. This is despite the fact that the present court is, how shall we say, partisan? No, that ain't right... Biased? In the pocket of the rich? Bat-shit crazy? Getting closer...
So why does the Supreme Court receive such esteem?
The prevailing theory is that they fly under the radar. That is, they allow very limited coverage and what coverage they get is... I dunno. Fluff? Whatever.
Still, this is a partisan, activist, radical court. And that fact gets very little coverage on the mainstream (corporate owned) media.
But, why is the Supreme Court respected? At all? Is there an institution that deserves less respect? I mean, a government institution (of course the KKK deserves less respect, because they are pretty much unanimous and slightly more overt).
Why, oh why, does not the media accurately cover the Supreme Court? And why do they fawn over them so much?
Perhaps it is because their coverage is influenced and (frequently) reported by lawyers. Lawyers are really necessary to our system of justice. However, lawyers are taught to argue any damned side of an argument. You gotta mass murderer? You gotta lawyer. You shoot an unarmed black kid in Florida? You gotta lawyer. No matter what heinous crime you commit, you have a lawyer. And that is as is should be.
But lawyers do not, by their training, give a shit about right and wrong. They know the law. They lord it over the rest of us. If the law says that slavery is okay, most lawyers will agree. If it does not, there are some that will argue for the other side. This is why the public, at large, hates lawyers. But lawyers are necessary to our system of justice. Essential, in fact. Our society would collapse without them. (I think that most of them are nice people in real life). But, for God's sake, why in the HELL would ANYONE want an amoral person (by training) to give an opinion on a Supreme Court decision? I mean, really? Do I REALLY want to know what a lawyer says about voter restriction today? Tell us what a decision will do, what the effects are. Not legalisms about how someone can try to justify overt racism. I DO NOT CARE about the justification for injustice. Do not try to explain to me why this is correct. At least once, show me the results. Of any case.
Show me an old woman turned away at the polls because she does not drive. Show me a rape victim trying to abort because she has no access to legitimate healthcare. Show me a lot of dead people, denied healthcare because Justice Roberts thinks that states can refuse Medicaid funding. Pile the bodies up like cordwood. Show me that.
Show me a corporation that loves and cries (THEN it is a person). Show me how money equals speech while still allowing democracy to exist. Show me these things.
I double dog dare you.
