I really don't give a crap who the Democrats nominate for president in 2016.
Well, that is not really true. I do care, I want the most liberal candidate that can be elected. That is who I will vote for in the primary. That said, I don't think that it is really that important.
Would Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders really make a great difference with our current Congress? Or conversely, would Hillary Clinton be more successful with a supermajority in both houses (by successful, I mean, more progressive legislation passed)? Of course, I would rather have the ideal. A really liberal congress and a really liberal president. But given the choice, I would pick a really liberal congress. Hell, with a veto-proof majority, I would pick that even with a Republican president.
I really believe that true change for good comes from the bottom up. Even a true liberal can accomplish only so much. We cannot depend upon one person to be our savior (sorry, right-wing evangelicals, that ain't the way the real world works). Some liberals thought that electing a black president would solve all our problems. Nope. We are not a dictatorship (yet). We have to push, push our agenda. Can you tell that I was an early Obama supporter? A disappointed one...
During the last Presidential election, I remember a Republican congressman saying something along these lines (I'm sorry I cannot find the exact source right now): this guy said he would support Mitt Romney, not because he thought he would be a good leader, but just so he signed whatever they passed. And he would have.
We have to change the conversation. The pendulum has swung so far to the right that it is insane.
We need a Democratic Congress. At this point in time, we also need a supermajority in the Senate. 2016 is a great year for Democratic Senatorial candidates. I really don't care who the President will be at that point, just let it be a Democrat. In an ideal world, that president would be at least as liberal as me, but at this point, I would accept almost any damned Democrat. My preference now is a candidate with really, really long coattails. So that we win the Senate and House. This is a possibility.
Yes, in 2016.
