This started as just a riff on Harry Reid's reference to the Iraq War, but this did get me thinking about how we could start tying the current gov't shutdown/debt limit crises to overarching narrative arcs of Republican/Conservative/Tea Party/Libertarian/Right Wing complete f'd upedness. And what better disastrous narrative arc to link to than the Iraq War?
But then I actually started mulling on it, and it's a pretty good match! I'll see you below the squirl.
The Tea Party War on the ACA is like the War on Iraq because...
-They believe that they are fighting an evil madman bent on destroying America.
-They are funded and goaded on by corporate interests who are bent on profit.
-Their case for war is based on faulty intelligence and fearmongering.
-They have cobbled together a coalition of the willing through bribery, arm-twisting, and manipulation.
-They believe that they will be greeted as liberators (by the American public).
-They have made no plans for the aftermath (the consequences of their actions).
-The lives and wellbeing of hundreds of thousands of civilians are at risk.
They are willing to put the lives and well-being of their followers, and US citizens at risk, while they and theirs are protected from danger.
-Their actions are based on a long-term fantasy of a broader victory (over Democratic and Progressive initiatives).
-They are willing to crash the US economy to accomplish their goals.
-They have no concerns about the moral repercussions of their actions.
-They are desperate for a "Mission Accomplished" photo op.
