A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Are you smarter due to how you sleep?
I read an article that claims night owls are more intelligent than people who go to sleep early. This obviously is totally the opposite of what the only President of the United States who wasn't President of the United States said. Ben Franklin famously said, "Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise."
The article quoted this from Psychology Today:
In a study run on young Americans, results showed that intelligent individuals went to bed later on weeknights and weekends than their less intelligent counterparts. Intelligent people are more likely to be nocturnal than people with lower IQ scores.
It also quoted this from
Study Magazine:
Satoshi Kanazawa, a psychologist at the London School Of Economics And Political Science, reported that IQ average and sleeping patterns are most definitely related, proving that those who play under the moon are, indeed, more intelligent human beings.
Here's a link to that article:
http://www.stumbleupon.com/...
Well, I don't know about this at all. I do know that Celtic people were night hunters. I know that night owls are that way because they are the most "awake" at night and drag during the day.
Here's another interesting tidbit: Those with IQs less than 75 went to bed by 11:30 pm on weeknights in early adulthood, whereas those with IQs over 125 went to bed around after 12:30 am. This is no coincidence. Here are the average times American's in their 20's go to bed and arise compared to their IQ's:
Very Dull (IQ < 75)
Weekday: 11:41 pm -7:20 am
Weekend: 12:35 am -10:09 pm
Normal (90 < IQ < 110)
Weekday: 12:10 am -7:32 am
Weekend: 1:13 am -10:14 am
Very Bright (IQ > 125)
Weekday: 12:29 am -7:52 am
Weekend: 1:44 am -11:07 am
Well the times don't seem all that different. When I fall asleep depends upon what I've done. If I've been quite physical, I fall asleep earlier. If I've had a mentally taxing day, I also fall asleep earlier. Sleep is very important, especially deep sleep cycles, for having things in short-term memory transfer into long-term memory. I don't care what time you go to sleep, if you don't get a good sleep you're not better off having gone to bed late.
In Chinese Medicine they talk about this phenomenon. They say the day is yang and the night is yin. We are supposed to be the most active in the yang part of the daily cycle and least active during the yin part. If you can't fall asleep at night you have an imbalance in yin and yang. Actually you are considered to be yin deficient. A relative lack of yin compared to yang results in your not being able to go to sleep at night. You basically "yang out" during the "yin time" because your own balance of yin and yang is not in balance with the earth's yin and yang cycle. Yin deficient people will always get a "second wind" at night. They generally are the most "awake" at 11 PM or later and then have a hard time calming down. They also tend more towards worry and anxiety. They can't stop thinking about stuff which is what keeps them awake.
According to the article I linked to, night owls are 1) anti-establishment, 2) daydreamers, 3) more open-minded and 4) more proactive
Ben Franklin said lots of smart things such as: "Wine is constant proof that God loves us and loves to see us happy." And, "Money has never made man happy, nor will it, there is nothing in its nature to produce happiness. The more of it one has the more one wants."
Maybe I should have done this dairy about his quotes.
What do you think? Are you a night owl? Do you sleep easily or not?

Announcing Asheville, North Carolina as the location
for our next Regional Event! 9.26.15
Asheville, N.C. is the destination for September 26, 2015! DKos Asheville, the In-Real-Life group under the leadership of randallt, has been setting the example for other IRL groups across the nation regarding registering people to vote, getting out the vote, having a state open thread and setting up strategy conferences for their region. Because of this impressive leadership we've asked randallt to be the State Leader for all of North Carolina. We've got important work to do on the ground there and randallt has shown he's the person to make that happen.
All states are welcome to attend this event and if you do you can expect to meet Markos Moulitsas in person, as well as some of the Daily Kos staff. More details regarding this regional event will be shared in the future so please stay tuned to Connect! Unite! Act!
For now, SAVE THE DATE and spread the word!
navajo maintains the above event list. Kosmail her if you have any diaries
about your event or if you have changes or additions.
EVERYONE is welcome, tell us what you're working on,
share your show and tell, vent, whatever you want.
This is an open thread. Nothing is off topic.
