I opened a PPP poll a little bit ago and was surprised to see “mode text”. Maybe others are using this, but I hadn’t seen it before and find it very interesting. I get so many scam robocalls I won’t answer a number I don’t recognize, but I’d certainly answer a text message. So I have no idea how this robocall problem is distorting polls, or how sending texts would do the same. Obviously it seems there would be a generational difference for both phone and text.
Here are some of the results PPP found for Arizona
Match All Phone Text
Biden 46 45 47
Trump 46 52 41
--------------------------------------------------—
Buttigieg 44% 43% 45%
Trump 47% 53% 41%
-------------------------------------------------—
Sanders 46% 43% 50%
Trump 47% 52% 41%
--------------------------------------------------—
Warren 45% 42% 47%
Trump 47% 53% 40%
--------------------------------------------------—
There’s an obvious and consistent difference between phone responses and text responses.
There’s also a distinct similarity. In the purple/reddish state of Arizona, all the Democrats get almost the same support. I’m going to speculate that this kind of indicates that the claim of appealing to the center/right doesn’t seem to be an advantage. It sure seems that this election isn’t going to be primarily about health care or education, or even income inequality. This election seems to be a referendum on Donald Trump. People are seeming to indicate they will vote for any Dem instead of Trump. If our presidential candidate, and Senate candidates, and house candidates, run against Trump and teach more people to fear and despise him, the better we will do.
